Restoration of Teeth Damaged By Caries

Cavity fillings can be applied when the damage is small. Typical options for materials used in posterior restorations can include: silver amalgam, composite resins, porcelain, cast or gold alloys. Crown Placement can be used when the damage is moderate. The tooth is prepared to accept a crown. A crown is made to cover and protect the tooth. The crown is tried on for fit, shape and color. The bite is checked and adjusted. If all is satisfactory, the crown is bonded to the tooth.

Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment is needed when the decay invades the dental pulp.

An abscess (infection) caused by tooth decay. An opening is made through the crown of the tooth into the pulp chamber. The pulp is removed, and the root canals are cleaned, enlarged, and shaped.

The root canals are filled. A metal post may be placed in the root canal for structural support. The crown of the tooth is restored.
