Common Questions
Q: How can I best care for my braces?
A: Your braces will help your teeth shift and move into a healthier and more aesthetic position, but there may be some discomfort in the beginning of treatment during the first two months, as well as a couple of days after scheduled monthly visits. At some points, your wires may poke you and cause you discomfort. If this occurs, use your provided emergency wax to cover the wire. If you feel it is necessary, take an over-the-counter pain killer such as Tylenol.
Within the first few days of just getting your braces, your diet should consist of soft foods. To avoid breaking your braces, refrain from eating hard, crunchy foods (such as nuts), foods that contain bones, and chewing gum.
Practice good oral hygiene. Although braces themselves do not cause cavities or decalcification, the food trapped in the braces can. In order to avoid these problems, it is important to keep an ongoing habit of brushing and flossing. Brush your teeth at least three times a day, and brush slowly and thoroughly for 3 minutes each time. Floss right before you go to bed. Wear rubber bands and headgear as instructed. Following these instructions is rather important, as rubber bands and headgears help your teeth move into a better position.
Call the office immediately should you experience an emergency (i.e. if wax or pain-killers do not help). In case of loose attachments, you can wait until your next monthly appointment if they do not cause pain.
