Features of a Smile
When deciding how you would like to improve your smile, it can be helpful to know some basic facts about teeth. Consider the factors listed here.
Number of Teeth
Teeth should fit comfortably in the mouth, and the lips should easily close, although this depends upon the facial shape and mouth size. At a resting position, a small amount of uppper front teeth should show, increasing as you smile. When smiling, a shadow should develop at the corners of the mouth. A small amount of gum tissue should also be visible.
Color
Tooth color depends upon an individual's age, skin and facial character. It is not constant throughout life and can be affected by many factors. A younger individual will have a more vital (whiter) tooth color due to the thickness of the enamel.
Shape
The size and shape of teeth are genetically determined. They should be fairly symmetrical in size and shape, and proprotional from tooth to tooth. The shape should be square to oval. There is no such thing as a typically male or female tooth form.
Alignment
Good, proper alignment of the jaw and dentition, as well as good masticatory function, may produce an aesthetically pleasing smile.
